Body Recomp Is Simpler Than You Think

Body recomposition, or “recomp,” means losing body fat while maintaining or building lean muscle. It can sound complicated because we’re often given two conflicting rules: eat less to lose fat, eat more to build muscle. But improving your body composition doesn’t require an extreme diet or an endless workout schedule. It comes down to a few fundamentals, done consistently.

Know what you’re trying to achieve

Before changing your diet or training, decide on your main goal: reduce body fat while maintaining muscle, build muscle while keeping fat gain minimal, or a bit of both. You can work toward more than one, but having a primary focus helps you decide how to approach your calories, macros and training.

And don’t assume the scale has to go down. When you lose fat while gaining muscle, your weight may stay the same or even increase slightly. That can still be a very successful recomp.

This is why measurements, progress photos, how your clothes fit and your strength in the gym can matter just as much as the number on the scale.

Make protein a priority

If you’re trying to build or maintain muscle, protein needs to be part of the equation. Rather than overcomplicating your nutrition, start by making sure your meals regularly include a quality protein source: eggs, poultry, fish, lean meat, Greek yoghurt, legumes and soy foods. Build the rest of your plate around vegetables, whole-food carbohydrates and healthy fats.

You don’t need to eliminate carbs or avoid fats.

Build balanced meals, prioritise protein and focus on overall diet quality.

Give your muscles a reason to stay

Nutrition can support muscle, but resistance training is what gives your body a reason to keep it. If you cannot train every day or lift the heaviest weight possible, it is still fine, what matters is a consistent programme that challenges your muscles and progresses over time. Different exercises, training approaches and rep ranges can all have a place in your training.

The simple rule: Train consistently. Challenge yourself. Progress gradually.

Move and recover

Regular movement supports your fitness and overall energy expenditure.

Choose activities you enjoy and can maintain walking, cycling, swimming, running, or anything else that fits your life. Then give your body time to recover. Sleep, rest days, adequate nutrition and recovery between demanding sessions all matter, your body needs time to adapt to the training stimulus. If you’re constantly exhausted and more exercise isn’t improving your results, the answer probably isn’t another workout.

Sometimes recovery is part of the plan, not a break from it.

Eat for your goal and your life

If fat loss is your priority, you may need a calorie deficit. If building muscle is the priority, eating around for maintenance or in a modest surplus may make more sense. The goal isn’t to eat as little as possible, it’s to eat the amount that supports what you’re working toward while giving your body what it needs.

Just as important: your approach must fit your lifestyle. A plan that works perfectly for four weeks but falls apart the moment you travel, go out for dinner or have a busy week isn’t a very useful plan. Holidays, social occasions and off days are normal, not failures.

A sustainable approach will always beat a perfect one you can’t maintain.

Measure progress differently

When your goal is body recomposition, don’t let the scale tell the whole story. Track:

  • Body measurements
  • Progress photos
  • How your clothes fit
  • Strength and training performance
  • Energy and overall wellbeing
  • Consistency with your habits

You might weigh exactly the same but carry less body fat and more muscle. That is progress.

The simple recomp formula

Body recomposition doesn’t need complicated rules.

  • Eat well, prioritise protein and build balanced meals
  • Train your muscles, resistance train consistently and progressively
  • Move regularly, choose activities you enjoy and can maintain
  • Recover properly, sleep, rest, and give your body time to adapt
  • Measure the right things, look beyond the scale
  • Stay consistent, give the process enough time to work

The takeaway

Body recomposition isn’t about becoming lighter. It’s to become stronger, leaner and healthier in a way you can actually maintain. You don’t needto overhaul your life to lose fat and build muscle. You just need to get a few important things right and give them time to work.

Your body doesn’t need perfection.

It needs consistency

Eat well. Train smart. Recover. Stay consistent.
